Education and Minorities

What does this research group do?

The Education & Minorities (E&M) research group carries out empirical research in support of government policy. Topics studied include trends in education (e.g. initial education and adult education) and the integration of ethnic minorities.

Education

Here, the emphasis is on developments in the education system, for example the impact of market forces (in education provision) and the concept of 'new learning' (in an educational content). In addition, the E&M research group conducts research on the course of school careers (including those of early school-leavers) and the part played by parents, teachers and school governing bodies in present-day education.

Minorities

The E&M research group's studies of ethnic minorities provide information on various aspects of integration. An important place is given to describing and explaining the educational and labour market position of ethnic minorities. Other key topics are:

·         discrimination on the labour market

·         socio-cultural integration

·         the significance of the geographical concentration of immigrants for their integration and for mutual perceptions

The research group is also involved in the preparation and implementation of large-scale surveys of non-indigenous groups in Dutch society.

SCP publications

The E&M research group periodically reports on the current state of and developments in education in SCP publications such as the Social and Cultural Report (Sociaal en cultureel rapport), The Social State of the Netherlands and a range of reports on specific groups. The research group also reports periodically on the integration of non-Western immigrant groups in the Integration Annual Report.
