Public Services Sector

What does this research group do?

The public sector is responsible for the allocation and distribution of public goods and services. The Public services sector research group investigates developments in public services. Recently we have published studies on the use of long-term care, childcare services, youth care, housing services and municipal services. We distinguish between three aspects of public services, namely:

  • Demand
  • Supply
  • Distribution

Demand

What is the level of demand for public services, and what determines this? In addition to answering these questions, the research group also compiles demand forecasts.

Supply

How is the provision of public services arrived at? The research group also studies the efficiency  of the production of these services, as well as the impact of changes in the production structure on the costs of services.

Distribution

What consequences does the use of public services have for users' welfare? In addition to this question on benefit incidence, the research group examines whether major changes in the regulations governing public services have an effect on incomes.

Research methods

The Public services sector research group formulates econometric models to explain developments in public services, and compiles projections of public expenditure based on these econometric models. In addition, the research group analyses the productivity and quality of public services and the redistribution effects of public transfers.
