Time, Media and Culture
What does this research group do?
The Time, Media & Culture (TMC) research group is concerned with people's everyday lives. How do people spend their time? The research group analyses and reports on the findings of the Dutch Time Use Survey (TBO). It also carries out multi-year research programmes in the fields of media, culture, sport and ICT.
Time
The TMC research group studies the lives of the Dutch population through the Time Use Survey (TBO), in which respondents keep a continuous record of their daily activities for a week in October. Among other things the research looks at the balance between commitments and free time, the division of tasks between men and women, the timing of activities and the wide variety of leisure pursuits.
Media and culture
At the request of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the TMC research group explores changes in media use in the digital era, as well as trends in cultural interests. Special attention is devoted to artistic activities forming part of people's leisure pursuits, as well as public interest in cultural heritage and the arts.
ICT
The TMC research group carries out research on social aspects of ICT, such as Internet use among teenagers and senior citizens. Between 2003 and 2007, SCP worked with a succession of partners on editing the Dutch yearbook ICT and society. For several years, the TMC research group has also been studying the relationship between digitisation and cultural participation and media use.
Sport
At the request of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the TMC research group reports on the position of sport in Dutch society, resulting in the periodic publication of the Report on sport. In addition, the research group has carried out research on undesirable behaviour in recreational sport.
