Original title: Emancipatiemonitor 2008

Emancipation is a theme that has been attracting a lot of interest in recent years. All kinds of groups active in the field of emancipation have expressed their views in charters, books and debates. The government was also keen to take the emancipation process forward, based on the view that, while a great deal has been achieved, that process is not complete.

The Emancipation Monitor 2008 and explores whether the emancipation process is proceeding in the direction envisaged in emancipation policy. It does this by presenting the most recent statistics on the position of women and men in the following domains: education; paid and unpaid work and the combination of work and care tasks; income; political and social decision-making; violence against women; and - for the first time in this Monitor - health.

This Emancipation Monitor shows that progress has again been made in the emancipation process, though not do the same degree on all fronts. There has for example been a substantial rise in the labour participation rate of women, but women's economic independence is increasing only slowly. The number of women progressing to senior management positions is also growing only marginally.
