Original title: Gewenste groei.
In the 1970s and 80s, a number of new towns were
built in the Netherlands on the initiative of the national government. The
intention was that the number of residents and homes in these new towns
would grow rapidly. During the course of a decade, from 1975 to 1985, these
'growth centres' were helped by financial injections from central
government.
What do these towns look like today? This publication tracks the way in
which the Dutch new towns have developed in recent decades. Have they
remained little more than suburban commuter municipalities? Or has the
growth process led to the creation of new medium-sized towns?
In answering these questions, the report looks at the position of these
towns in terms of demography, housing, employment, the level and use of
services, and social life.
