Original title: Emancipatiemonitor 2002.

The Emancipation Monitor 2002 (Emancipatiemonitor 2002) provides statistics on the progress of the emancipation process, collected and analysed jointly by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research/SCP.

Is the emancipation process in the Netherlands on track? What has been achieved? It is generally known that more and more women are becoming and remaining active on the labour market, but are other differences between women and men also reducing? It is of interest to know whether the proportion of men working part-time is increasing, and also whether men are spending more time on unpaid work. And what about the differences in the educational careers of women and men? The gender pay gap, the economic independence of women, the objectives derived from the emancipation policy (achieved or not achieved?) are also issues addressed in this study.

The Emancipation Monitor 2002 presents an overview of developments and describes the current status of the emancipation process in the areas of education; paid and unpaid work; daytime activities; income; political and social decision-making; violence against women; and the knowledge-based society. Although emancipation is no longer as high on the political agenda as it was in the twentieth century, the figures show that there are still areas where there is stubborn inequality between the sexes. And although the emancipation process is progressing in many areas, on some fronts it is stagnating or even moving backwards.
