Main surveys

SCP draws data from a large number of surveys of the Dutch population, and sometimes also of the populations of other countries. The most important supplier of data is Statistics Netherlands (CBS), though another key data provider is DANS (Data Archiving and Networked Services). Other sources of data include government departments, universities, etc.

SCP has also carried out surveys itself in a number of areas, either alone or in partnership with other research institutes. The Time Use Survey (TBO) has been carried out since 1975 and tracks the way people in the Netherlands spend their time. In the Amenities and Services Utilization Survey (AVO), data are gathered on people's use of hospitals, retirement homes, educational services, legal aid, home care, nurseries, museums, pop music and sport. The first survey on these topics dates from 1979. Other surveys focus on issues such as cultural changes in the Netherlands, the social position of ethnic minorities and their use of provisions and services, the life situation of older persons living in nursing homes, and the life of school pupils.
