Countryside
The Dutch countryside is changing. Several knowledge institutes are engaged in mapping out the changes that are taking place in agriculture, nature and the physical landscape. Until recently, however, changes in the social domain were measured in a fragmentary way, if at all. By monitoring social and cultural developments, policymakers hope to be able to track changes in the life situation of the rural population in the future and thus keep track of the social vitality of rural communities.
Monitor
The countryside has traditionally been the subject of ad hoc
research at SCP, but since 2007 it has become a regular research topic. At
the request of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food
Quality (renamed in late 2010 to the Ministry of Economic Affairs,
Agriculture and Innovation), SCP is developing a monitor with a view to
enabling policymakers to follow social and cultural changes in the
countryside and spot any problems.
Research at SCP
Research on the countryside is carried out by the Housing,
Liveability & Safety research group. You will find information here
on current projects and recent publications. The research is embedded in the
Social State of the Countryside programme.
