Disability

There are approximately 1.7 million people with physical impairments living in the Netherlands. They participate less in the labour market than people without disabilities; their social and civic participation, for example visiting museums, theatre or the cinema, is also lower.

Life situation
SCP studies different aspects of the life situation of people with disabilities, with the emphasis being on people with physical impairments. The research covers their labour participation, how they perceive their own health and well-being, their experience of living independently and their use of care provisions. The integral Report on the Disabled (Rapportage gehandicapten) was published between 1995 and 2007 and devoted attention to areas such as education, employment, financial position, leisure time use and use of care provisions.

Participation
In addition to SCP, the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (NIVEL) carries out research on the social and civic participation of people with a chronic illness and with motor or sensory impairments using the National Chronic Illness and Disability Panel ( Nationaal Panel Chronisch Zieken en Gehandicapten). The Living Together Panel ( Panel Samen Leven) is another NIVEL initiative and comprises people with mild learning disabilities and/or their next of kin.
