Housing

Housing is a basic need for everyone. It not only means having a roof over one's head, but also an affordable, preferably attractive home in a pleasant setting. Housing can be viewed from several perspectives. On the demand side, the preferences and experiences of citizens dominate; on the supply side, the government plays an important role in ensuring the availability of good and adequate housing.

Circumstances and wishes
SCP has carried out research on housing since its inception. This has resulted in a series of general overviews of the housing conditions and wishes of the Dutch population, as well as observations on housing policy. In addition, SCP looks at the housing position of specific groups, such as the elderly, young people, migrants and their progeny. In recent years SCP has been devoting more attention to the quality of the residential environment, urban renewal and people's preferences in respect of the residential environment. An example is the research on the restructuring of residential districts.

Economy, sustainability and the market
In addition to SCP, Dutch universities, research bureaus and consultancies and other government agencies such as the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) and the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) also carry out a great deal of housing research. The Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis studies housing and the housing market from an economic perspective, while the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency emphasises the spatial aspects and housing sustainability. Research bureaus and consultancies such as OTB focus on the supply side of the housing market: the land market, construction market and finance.

Research at SCP
Housing research at SCP is carried out primarily by the Housing, Liveability and Safety research group. You will find information here on recent studies and publications. Other research groups also carry out relevant research; for example, housing as a public sector provision, and the degree to which citizens derive profit from financial transfers to help with renting or home ownership are regular research topics for the Public Services Sector research group. The Participation & Governance  and Education & Minorities research groups are concerned with the social aspects of the residential environment.
