Youth and Family

Youth policy in the Netherlands is concerned mainly with fostering the development and protection of young people. Increasing the opportunities for young people and providing parenting support demands knowledge, for example about the reality of the daily lives of children, young people and parents, and about the problems faced by growing children and parents. Information on the use that parents and children make of support agencies is also important for good youth policy.

Four themes
The SCP research focuses on four themes:

  1. Bringing up children in families
How do parents experience bringing up their children? Do they encounter problems? Do they make use of parenting support services? A good deal of attention is devoted to differences between groups of parents.

  2. Social participation and engagement by young people
What do young people do in their free time and how do they view society and politics?

  3. Psychosocial health of young people
International research focusing on the health and well-being of young people in industrialised nations, including the Netherlands.

  4. Use of youth welfare services
This research is commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, which funds provincial youth welfare services, and carried out in collaboration with the Public Services Sector research group. SCP has developed a forecasting and allocation model to gain an insight into how many people use youth welfare services (medium-term trends) and the distribution of those users across the different youth welfare regions.

Collaboration
SCP works or has worked with other knowledge institutes within the theme Youth & Family. Examples include Statistics Netherlands (CBS), TNO Quality of Life and E-quality. SCP has also been engaged for some time in partnership with the Trimbos Institute and Utrecht University on the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) project, an international research programme focusing on the health and well-being of young people, which is repeated every four years.
