Emancipation, Youth and Family

What does this research group do?

The Emancipation, Youth & Family (EJG) research group is concerned with trends in the emancipation of women, the life situation and participation of young people, the need for parenting support, and the acceptance of homosexuality. The research is generally comparative in nature and looks at differences, for example between the sexes, between people of different ethnic origins, and between people with and without children.

The emancipation of women

The research into emancipation concentrates in particular on developments surrounding emancipation and developments in sexual inequality. A recurrent publication is the Emancipation Monitor, outlining the current situation and trends. Topics include education, paid employment, the division of tasks between men and women, the combination of employment and care, income, political and social decision-making and violence against women. In addition EJG conducts in-depth studies into the combination of employment and care in such areas as child care, leave and part-time employment.

Acceptance of homosexuality

A recent pillar in the emancipation research is the acceptance of homosexuality. In 2006 EJG issued two publications in this field. At the request of the Dutch government the SCP will also be identifying trends in this area in the coming years.

Youth and family

The youth research concentrates on three topics:

  • child-rearing in families
  • social participation by and engagement of youth
  • psychosocial health of youth

The way in which these topics is handled depends on policy-led issues or social discussions concerning youth. In this regard EJG regularly enters into collaborative ventures with other research institutes, such as TNO-kwaliteit van leven, the Trimbos-instituut and the University of Utrecht.
