Time, Media and Culture

What does this research group do?

The Time, Media & Culture (TMC) research group is concerned with everyday life. How do people spend their time? TMC examines and reports on the Dutch time-use survey. TMC conducts multi-year research programmes concerning media, culture, sport and ICT.

Time

TMC studies the life of the Dutch population by means of the time-use survey (TBO), in which people keep a record of their activities. Among other things the focus is on the balance between commitments and free time, the division of tasks between men and women, the timing of activities and the wide variety of leisure pursuits.

Media and culture

At the request of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, TMC examines changes in media use as a result of digitisation, as well as trends in cultural interests. Special attention is paid to the artistic activities forming part of people's leisure pursuits and public interest in the cultural heritage and the arts.

ICT

TMC conducts research into the social aspects of ICT, such as Internet use among teenagers and senior citizens. During the period 2003-2007 the SCP, in collaboration with a succession of differing parties, edited the Dutch yearbook ICT and Society. For several years now TMC has also been researching the relationship between digitisation on the one hand and cultural participation and media use on the other.

Sport

At the request of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, TMC reports on the position of sport in Dutch society. The Sport Report is published periodically. In addition TMC has conducted research into undesirable behaviour in recreational sport.
