Life situation Index

Compare your life situation with the rest of the Netherlands.

SCP has been researching the life situation of the Dutch population since 1974. The Life Situation Index combines information on eight areas of life which together present a picture of someone's life situation. Those areas of life are housing, health, leisure time use, ownership of consumer durables, holiday patterns, sport, mobility and social participation. The results of this research are published in The Social State of the Netherlands / De sociale staat van Nederland. You can consult this report if you would like to know more about the Life Situation Index.

You can use the questions below to discover your own score on the SCP Life Situation Index. Together, these questions comprise a compact version of the full questionnaire that is used by SCP to compile the Index.

If you answer all 19 questions and then click on "Calculate life situation", you will see your score. Your score is also compared with the average score of selected groups in the Dutch population.

1 What kind of home do you live in?

2 How big is your home, in square metres (m²)?

3 How many bedrooms, living rooms, studies or workrooms are there in your home?Rooms that are used exclusively for a business or occupation do not count.

4 Do you, or does one of the members of your household, own your home?

5 How many hobbies do you have? Examples are making music, singing, ballet, amateur dramatics, painting or drawing, handicrafts, DIY, collecting, using a computer (for a hobby), walking or cycling.

6 How many of the following cultural activities have you visited at least once during the past 12 months?
