Marcel Coenders werkt sinds 2018 bij het SCP. Hij promoveerde in 2001 aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen op het proefschrift Nationalistic Attitudes and Ethnic Exclusionism in a Comparative Perspective. Hij werkte als universitair docent bij de afdeling Methoden en Technieken van sociaal-wetenschappelijk onderzoek aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en vervolgens als universitair hoofddocent bij de afdeling Algemene Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht. In zijn onderzoek richt hij zich onder andere op intolerantie, discriminatie op de arbeidsmarkt, nationalisme, sociale cohesie en solidariteit.
